Ok, so I know that this may seem obvious but one of the first things that you should do is to establish a base. Why did I start here when I have already said this? Because it's important. Having a base is fundamental for getting yourself into a position that will allow you to flourish.
With all the above said, lets look into some things that weren't covered when I simply told you to set up a base. I want to go into more detail and discuss both the pros and cons associated with home hunting.
Let's start with some pros:
These 5 points are important because they all are advantages to having a home base. Having a base allows you to take shelter from both the weather and the various enemies that want to either eat or loot you....or both. Obviously if you are settled into an area, familiarity with the terrain becomes natural. Inside the shelter, storing various ingredients for food and crafting becomes simpler and safer when accessing. When crafting, no need to worry about something destroying your smithy or such while you are busy with other things. Finally, spawning. Having a base to spawn in allows you to recollect yourself after an untimely death and to resupply yourself with reserves. Should you choose to go retrieve your missing items then that's on you but at least you know where you will spawn if you happen to die.
Although this list could be expanded, we want to leave it as simple as possible for now. More things will become apparent as you play and get familiar with the game.
Now lets discuss the cons of having a home base:
The three points mentioned above mostly refer to when playing with other people who aren't friendly but aren't limited to just that. If everything is in one place then that means everything is gone if a large dino where to trample through it and the structure not strong enough to withstand it (thatch/wood not good building materials). When playing in a server where there are other players, it is very likely that if your home is discovered then it will be looted and/or destroyed. People are often assholes in this game so keep that in mind. Try to form alliances but be wary because it's not uncommon to be accepted in only to be robbed and then booted out. Finally, try to pick your dream home area carefully. There are several places where just about the only animals that spawn are large carnivores. Last thing you want to see when stepping outside your door is the jaws of a rex lol.
Now, lets discuss some things to look for when you want to establish your home. First you have to decide: do you want you dwelling to be in the open or in a hidden away area? This is important and will help determine where you settle down and what you do to secure it.
On a personal note, I generally prefer places that are out of the way but near good resources. Depending on the map, this can be most anywhere so saying that doesn't much help. There is another thing to consider: will this be a temporary base or your endgame base? Everyone more or less wants to strive for a base that is hard to penetrate and can provide all that is needed to support continued survival. This for me means that I want to be somewhere that has a high concentration of metal/crystal/water/etc. This is because most of the higher end structures/weapons/armors require these and water is always necessary and can be tricky to find if not near a readily available source. Metal structures have a stronger defensive value and so does the armor. Metal also plays a role in making better weapons and ammunition. As far a location goes, I like to be hidden. This also makes it easier to defend and gives fewer openings to attack that might offer entrance to uninvited guests, whether they have bullets/arrows or teeth. Just something to consider.

Now lets discuss the cons of having a home base:
- Everything in one spot
- If discovered by other players, will likely be looted/destroyed
- If in a bad area, situation can quickly turn disadvantageous
