Welcome to the rant corner! I know, it may seem strange that this kind of board would find its way onto a gaming site but what the hell, why not? Right?
Well, with that having been said, I'll go first! Ya know, to get things started.
Here goes:
Lack of communication, cooperation. I detest playing games like BF3/4 and such where teamwork is the main point and everyone wants to treat it like CoD. Seriously, there is a reason why there are "squads" and not simply teams. Am I pointlessly complaining? Sure, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm right. Lets take it a step further, shall we? Platoons. The concept of teamwork, squads, platoons, etc are all tools meant to prioritize cooperation and strategy.
Is all the above necessary to win a match? Not really, if you are good enough. But that isn't the point of games like BF3/4 and Rainbow 6 Siege and a whole host of other games. Truthfully the only reason I even wanted to join a platoon on these games is because I shine better in a group rather than solo and perhaps I'm only a mediocre player that is just bitter. I can accept these things since I am mature enough to do a self evaluation. Still doesn't change the facts above though. Is dominating a server solo fun? Hell yeah. Is it something I can do? Definitely, under the right circumstances. Is it what I want? Not really, I prefer teamwork to make an impact.
I've heard the argument that even the best team is defenseless against a beast mvp. A point that is often made by the guy that regularly "pulls the team" but I've also proven on numerous occasions that if the team works together then even the "beast mvp" is an easy prey. There is a reason for the expression "strength in numbers". Some might consider that to mean that a well placed grenade is all it'll take to remove the "well coordinated team" but then again maybe not. The same logic applies to the mvp guy; drop a grenade or m320 at his feet and he dies like the rest of us.
I've played more games than I care to count or recall where the main goal is simply to be at the top. I'm tired of simply being at the top. I want a group success. This is something that is hard to find and when you do find it, it's very short lived. Every now and then, however, you find someone or a few someones, that can offer what you seek. I can give a good example of this: Blood Wolves
During the ps3 days on bf3 I was a leader among the Blood Wolves platoon when they were still around. We were a group of like minded individuals who, mostly had either military experience or something similar. We worked together very well. Oddly enough none of us were particularly great players on our own but together we were unstoppable. We regularly participated in training matches, used the same terminology, and everyone understood their roles and if need be how to play the other roles. We became so well known that eventually people stopped playing against us. We were regularly banned from other servers and after a while were even blacklisted on new servers also. We weren't that great alone and in a way that was kinda a lure in itself. Players from other platoons would see that we did so-so while alone or with one or two others and since clan battles were still a major thing back then, the idea would be that they would challenge us and then will. It almost never worked out for them that way though. In the end we lost a total of 4 clan battles while I was in BW and 2 of those were during matches where the other clan cheated. Because we often posted the videos online it was obvious but there were more than a few sore losers. The other two times the other teams were simply better than us. So we analyzed what happened and practiced to cover our weak points and challenged them ourselves. We didn't lose a second time to either of them.
I had hoped to revive this mindset and cooperation within BoM, however I failed miserably lol. Like I said, I'm not a great player on my own but I do have my moments. These days I spend far more time at work than I do on the game as opposed to before but I still enjoy a good game. I longed for a good chance to work as a cohesive unit again and secure the victory and this did indeed happen a few times but ultimately it was almost all TDM and that gets old quick. I'm honestly not a TDM kinda guy and I tried to become an effective member but I fear that I only caused more problems than I helped resolve. I even created this site (although this site has no where near as much info or accessories as the BW site). I considered making an app but after a while I got curious and realized that there are numerous apps already out that performed exactly the same functions that I wanted to incorporate but I simply don't have the funds to keep them up and it isn't worth it. I have felt myself drift away from the platoon and it saddens me but I feel that the goals they had at the time verses the ones I had did not match up or even come close. Few of the suggestions offered were heeded and fewer still questions asked were properly answered. While I did enjoy my time there and playing with them I felt it was time to move on. Even now I still enjoy playing with the members of BoM and will likely try to keep a cordial relationship with them.
As it stands I intend to keep the site up for anyone to view and see since it is currently free and there is no real reason to shut it down. Who knows, maybe someone will find it useful. I can only hope so. I shut down the BW site I made when it was disbanded several years ago. People moved on. I can only hope that this time that it will last longer.
