Ok! so you've started playing 7DTD but are unsure of where to go from there or what to do next, right? Of course you are! The game is pretty much a "leave the kids to their own devices" kinda thing. Really. There is literally almost no real objective other that the one you create for yourself which is pretty much just going to be to survive and build...and survive to build...and then repeat lol. But don't let it fool ya. As repetitive as it may be, there is loads of reasons to play 7DTD even with out an overarching plot line that drags you along *cough*skyrim*cough*.
Once you spawn in to the world you have created for yourself or the navegaze map that is prebuilt for you, you will be prompted with 2 dialogue boxes that you should read. It's important to note that when you initially spawn in for the first time you will have a null zone around you for a set period of time where there will be no zeds around to pester you right off the bat. Try not to stray too far from your starting point at first. collect the materials that it will ask you to gather from the top right of your screen. There are a total of 8 survival tutorials that it will lead you through and will award you 1 skill point to spend upon its completion.
Take note that literally everything in the game is destructible with the sole exceptions of the bottom bedrock and the radiation zone surrounding the world you now inhabit. Be mindful that in this game it is imperative that you manage to secure ample food and water since you can die from both thirst and hunger. Your eventual goal is to have a base where you are able to easily acquire water and grow produce like corn and potatoes. The game will persist until you simply get tired of playing but that's ok. The longer you manage to survive in the world, the more aggressive, numerous, and more varied the assault on you will become. Every 7 days (thus the name "7 days to die"), a horde of undead will converge on your location regardless of where you are in the world. The moon will become blood red and the zeds will know exactly where you are. The higher the day count relative to 7 you are surviving in, the more dangerous the hordes become. A good example of this is day 7 will simply be a small horde of walking zeds. Day 14 will include dogs, slightly more zeds. Day 21 will have even more zeds and include spider zeds (human zeds that crawl on all fours and are both able to climb and strike downwards) and it progresses from there. Some zeds (cops) are even able to spit a toxic green mass at you from a distance.
There are several "biomes" within the world that offer different resources and dangers.
If you were unfortunate enough to spawn in the desert biome then rejoice. There is a benefit to being in the desert: yuuka plant. This little gem can be found on the plants in the desert and are an essential ingredient to creating various drinks. This is important because of the effects it offers when boiled into a drink. The reason I called it unfortunate if you spawned here is because the desert is very hot and causes dehydration very quickly which can be fatal. Watch your footing as lots of drop off caves and such can be found here. More so than other biomes.
Next up is the forest biome. Here there are lots of trees, hills, dogs, and various plants. Ideally this is the biome you want to start in simply because it will have the majority of what you could want to survive. If you happen to survive in this biome then I strongly recommend quickly completing the 8 tutorial quests (top right of screen), and then digging down. Yes, down. It may seem odd but only a few zeds possess the ability to attack downwards and cause damage. Spider zeds are one example. More on those later.... Forest biome is also home to the most amount of animals to hunt for food. Get those bows up a good bit in level and have plenty of arrows since attacking them up close will be almost impossible.
Another biome you will encounter is what I call the Desolate biome. This place is void of most resources that you will need to survive but like the desert biome, it also has a uniquely plentiful resource that will be handy to have: iron. look on the ground for what appears to be I-beams piled on top of each other. destroying these with a stone axe will yield some iron which is used in constructing not only tools/weapons but also in upgrading whatever structure you choose to inhabit. Take note of the large number of coolers and lockers that will be scattered about here. They often have useful loot. Be wary of dogs.
Snowy biome. Yes, this game has a snowy biome and its surprisingly the next to the most unforgiving one since it has the fastest ability to kill you but is plentiful in resources. Hypothermia is a serious issue in this biome much like heat in the desert but unlike the desert the snowy biome has a zed that is unique to it: Lumberjack zed. This monster of a zed is an annoyance since they are difficult to kill and are at times close together. That said, if you happen to be there then the chances of finding a house with a furnace already inside is decent although there will likely only be one so good luck finding it. Furnaces are important because they are used to deal with raw material and make them into something useful and also because its simply not possible to get a good base together that will last past the 5 horde night while above ground without one.
Burning biome. This place is practically on a death zone and is the most likely to kill you. Few resources can be found here and stepping in the wrong place can easily result in the character catching on fire. Sometimes the zeds that spawn here are capable of causing burn damage since they themselves are either on fire or are smoldering. Honestly, there is little else to say about this biome as it offers little but that doesn't mean it's barren....just that it offers little.
As you progress into the world, you will encounter numerous structures, environments, animals, and zeds. Another note or two for the introduction to 7DTD is to avoid cities since there will be many.....many.....zeds present including dogs and flying giant insects and to be wary when approaching structures that seem to be military in nature since there will be mines all over the place and one hit is enough to kill you regardless of your hp level.
Further information will be provided in the relevant threads for this game.
